Muslin vs Stretch Swaddles: How to Choose for Your Newborn

New to Fledge & Thread? If you’d like a gentle overview of our stories, fabrics and how our pieces fit together, start with our Parent Guide to Fledge & Thread.

There’s a moment most parents remember: standing over a sleepy newborn (or a very awake one), holding a swaddle and thinking… Which one is actually going to work?
At Fledge & Thread, our swaddles are designed to feel practical in real life, but still carry that storybook softness we love. This guide is here to help you choose between muslin swaddles and stretch wraps without the overwhelm, plus a few gentle tips on swaddling safely.
First, what’s the difference?
Both muslin and stretch are popular for a reason, they simply do different jobs.
Muslin swaddles
Muslin is loved for being lightweight and breathable. It’s the kind of swaddle you’ll use beyond the newborn weeks because it’s so versatile: pram shade, nursing cover, light layer on warm days, or a familiar comfort in the nappy bag.
Our muslin swaddles are made from soft cotton and feature our hand-illustrated prints, designed in Australia.

Stretch wraps
Stretch wraps have a little give, which helps you create a snug wrap that stays put. Many parents find stretch easier when baby is very small and still has a strong startle reflex.
Our stretch wraps are made from soft cotton with added stretch, designed to fold up compactly for prams, car journeys and everyday life.
A quick side-by-side (the simple version)
- Feel: Muslin is airy and light. Stretch is softly “hugging”.
- Ease: Muslin is flexible and multi-use. Stretch can feel easier to wrap snugly.
- Best for: Muslin suits warmer days and layering. Stretch suits newborn snugness (and wriggly little escape artists).
- Packability: Both travel well, but stretch wraps fold particularly compact.

How to choose: the “What are you really buying for?” checklist
Choose muslin if you want…
- Breathability (especially in warmer weather, or for layering)
- A swaddle that doubles as pram cover, nursing cover, light blanket
- Something you’ll keep using well beyond the newborn stage
Choose stretch if you want…
- A wrap that feels snug and secure
- A fabric that’s a little more forgiving when you’re learning to swaddle
- A compact wrap that lives in the nappy bag for pram naps and car journeys
And if you’re building a small “swaddle drawer”…
Many families end up loving one or more of each:
- 1 - 3 muslin swaddles for everyday versatility
- 1 - 3 stretch wrap for snug newborn sleeps (and quick wraps when you’re out)

What about our larger swaddle wraps?
If you’ve noticed our Muslin Wraps are larger, they’re designed with longevity in mind. Our Muslin swaddle wraps are generously sized, so they can stay useful as your baby grows, not just during the early weeks.
If you’re buying a gift and you want something that feels “extra” without being impractical, this is often a lovely direction to go. You can also explore our curated gifting here: Newborn Gift Ideas.
Swaddling safely (gentle reminders)
Every baby and every family is different, so always follow your health professional’s guidance for your little one. But here are a few widely recommended safety reminders parents often appreciate:
- Back to sleep: always place baby on their back for sleep.
- Keep it light: avoid overheating by using breathable layers and checking baby’s temperature.
- Hips matter: wrap snugly around the upper body, but allow room for the hips and legs to move freely.
- Stop when rolling begins: once baby shows signs of rolling (or by around 3 months, depending on guidance), it’s time to transition away from arms-in swaddling.
If you’d like clear, step-by-step safe wrapping guidance, we recommend reading official safe sleep resources (especially if you’re swaddling for sleep).
Care tips (so they stay beautiful)
Our care instructions can vary slightly by piece, so always check the product listing, but in general we design our wraps to be easy-care for everyday washing. A gentle wash and low tumble (or drying flat) helps keep fabrics soft over time.
If you’re still unsure, start here
If you’re choosing your very first wrap, we’d suggest beginning with what suits your day-to-day:
- Warm weather, multi-use, layering: start with muslin.
- Snug newborn sleeps and easy wrapping: start with stretch.
- Buying a gift: choose the style that feels most versatile (and consider a larger swaddle wrap if you want longevity).
