Every Design Has a Story: Meet Mouse and Rockinghorse 🐭🐴

At Fledge and Thread, every print begins with a pencil sketch - and every sketch begins with a story. One of our newest designs, ‘Mouse and Rockinghorse,’ is no different. Launching this May as part of our Winter FY25 range, it’s a little love letter to imagination, childhood daydreams, and quiet afternoons where magic hides in the ordinary.

This is the tale behind the design…

'Mouse Finds a Friend' - A Story for Little Daydreamers

Mouse had always dreamed of being a cowboy - riding scarf tied snugly, the wind ruffling his fur.

It was an ordinary Thursday in the Parker household. Max was at school, the house was quiet, and Mouse was out hunting for breakfast crumbs when something caught his eye.

A new horse! Mouse could hardly believe it. A real horse, right there in the house! His cowboy dreams were finally coming true. But if he wanted to ride this horse, he’d have to make friends with him first he thought to himself.

Determined, Mouse smoothed down his fur (just as he’d seen Max do before school) and gathered a few tiny flowers as a gift. He approached the horse and held them out. The horse didn’t say a word - but he didn’t run away either. That had to be a good sign. They were friends now.

Overjoyed, Mouse tied his riding scarf and climbed onto his new friend’s back. The moment he landed, the horse began to move. Mouse was riding! They rode for hours -galloping across the great plains of the Parker living room. It was the best day of Mouse’s life. But as the sky outside darkened, Mouse heard the front door open. Max and his family were home.

Reluctantly, Mouse climbed down and patted his friend farewell. “See you tomorrow,” he whispered. And with that, he scurried off, already dreaming of their next adventure together.

Why did we paint this design?

The Mouse and Rockinghorse print was born from a daydream. From the quiet wonder of a child’s room, and the simple things - like a wooden horse and a curious mind - that spark entire worlds.

Every brushstroke was layered with softness and story. We hope that when your little one wears it, they’ll feel part of something timeless - something full of whimsy and wild-hearted imagination.

Our Winter FY25 collection, featuring Mouse and Rockinghorse, will be available this May, including baby bodysuits, babygrows, long sleeve tops, swaddles and more. Designed in Australia. Painted with love. Made for childhood.
